From “Chutay” to a winter sports resort at 2,020 meters

The First Traces.

Around 1280, Kühtai was first mentioned as “Chutay” in the land register of the Counts of Tyrol. The name refers to its original use as high-altitude alpine pastures and grazing land.

Imperial Hunting in Kühtai

In 1497, Emperor Maximilian I acquired the hunting rights in Kühtai. Around 1622, construction began on a princely hunting lodge; to make it more accessible, a road was built through the Sellraintal Valley in 1624. Today’s Hotel Jagdschloss Kühtai largely retains the historic form of the original building.

How Skiing Came to Kühtai

Toward the end of the 19th century, skiing became widespread in the Alps. Travelogues and new skiing techniques sparked a veritable boom. Its high altitude, long snow season, and open terrain made Kühtai an ideal destination for winter sports from an early stage.

A Resort Continues to Evolve

Over the decades, what began as early ski tours and simple lifts evolved into a modern winter sports resort. Today, Kühtai combines state-of-the-art mountain railways and tourist infrastructure with its historic identity and unique location at over 2,000 meters.
