Lake Tour & Reservoirs

A visit to the reservoirs in Kühtai is a special experience. It’s fascinating to explore these large lakes with their shimmering turquoise waters and the massive dams. That’s why the reservoirs have become such popular destinations for day trips. The Sellrain-Silz hydroelectric power plant generates 100% clean electricity, which covers about 13% of Tyrol’s total electricity needs.

Finstertal Reservoir

This highest reservoir in Kühtai is located at 2,325 m; the rock-fill dam is 149 m high and 650 m wide, and its capacity is 60 million m³ of water. You can reach this dam either by taking the DreiSeenBahn and continuing along the Höhenpanoramaweg trail—with a stop for refreshments at the DreiSeen-Hütte—or you can hike up directly from Kühtai.

Längental Reservoir

The reservoir, with its 45-meter-high dam, is located at an elevation of 1,901 meters. The family-friendly loop trail around the reservoir begins at the parking lot right next to the reservoir. Unfortunately, due to a few steps near the power plant, the trail is not currently fully accessible.

Kühtai Reservoir

The reservoir, located at an elevation of 2,140 m, is scheduled to begin operations in 2026. It features a dam that is 113 m high and 510 m wide, and has a capacity of 31 million m³. It is situated in the Längental valley, upstream from the existing Längental Reservoir.

Energy Showroom

At the visitor center near the Finstertal Reservoir, visitors can learn more about the construction and engineering of the dam, the pumped-storage facility, and the Sellrain-Silz power plant complex.

Gain an interesting insight into hydroelectric power generation; the showroom is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
